Conveyor truck spreading compost across the Kennecott tailings embankment in Utah

Black Mountain Rock spread compost across the tailings piles to help new grass grow on the slopes.

The challenge

Tailings embankments are long, steep, and hard to work on. Dumping compost in piles and pushing it around with equipment is slow and tears up the slope.

How we did it

Our conveyor truck drove along the top of the embankment and threw compost out across the slope in a steady, even layer. The material lands right where it is needed without driving equipment onto the slope.
